“War Helms and Weapon Dancers”. Paul Mortimer and Andrew Richardson
This seminar by Paul Mortimer and Andrew Richardson will explore the design, origins and meaning of the Sutton Hoo helmet and similar helmets found across northern Europe, in the light of a significant new metal detector find from Kent. The seminar will also consider the identity of the mysterious horned figures depicted across the post-Roman northern world. Do these ‘weapon dancers’ depict a god, perhaps Woden/Odin, an unnamed god or entity, or are they representations of heathen priests or ritual dancers?
In his professional life, Continuum committee member Andrew is an archaeologist, and the Finds Liaison Officer for Kent. Paul Mortimer is an acknowledged expert on early Anglo-Saxon material culture, who reenacts King Redwald of Anglia, believed to be the person interred in the great ship burial at Sutton Hoo. Paul will be bringing his fabulous replicas of the Sutton Hoo treasures to the convention.
