The whaling fleets of Sinop are failing. The great ice-whales grow scarce, and too many schooners vanish on the outer ice.
Captain Astrid Halvorsen is hiring again. Her battered ice schooner Winter Crow has been repaired after a disastrous voyage – but most of her old crew refused to return. Now she’s signing on whoever she can find: debtors, drifters, and sailors with nowhere else to go.
The Crow is heading farther onto the frozen sea than most captains dare. Rival ships, a desperate crew, and rumours of something out on the ice destroying schooners mean this voyage may be Halvorsen’s last.
