Attack of the Beakmen

Shortly after dusk, the PCs are approaching a small village en route to the city of Punjar, the intention being to stop here for the night, with the hope of a comfortable bed and warm food. However, as they approach the village, the PCs discover that it is under attack by a horde of powerfully built green skinned humanoids, with powerful beaks and strange, clawed hands. The beakmen are aided by crocodile knights, dread warriors fighting astride giant crocodiles. The source of these unsavoury creatures is a towering stone obelisk that emerges from the lake, gouting water, mud and muck. PCs brave (or greedy) enough to plumb the depths of the obelisk discover powerful magics capable of transmuting physical form, and rending the veil between shadow and light.
